The massacre at My Lai was committed by the Charlie Company. They killed most of the people in the village. Hugh Thompson, Jr saved a small amount of civilians when he spotted them hiding in a bunker. While the Charlie Company was firing on other civilians he flew down in his helicopter and ordered his crew to fire upon any American soldier who got close. He then went into the bunker and ushered the civilians out. The soldiers who committed the massacre were led by Lieutenant William Calley. Some 340 people died. There was only one American casualty. PFC Carter shot himself in the foot.
